Be A Wingman!
Tom Cruise... classic clip. TOP GUN. Many of you have probably seen this movie. If you are a millennial, and haven't.. time to que it up on your latest streaming service! There are many great ideas and line in this movie, but there are also some mystifying UNtruths. One of the greatest ones that we all need to stop celebrating is:
A HERO saves the day.
We have become used to the idea that singular heroes save the day. They single handedly come in with big ideas, grand gestures and executable plans. How false this is! WE know that the best work is done by a caring group of individuals whom choose to work together to make a difference. Nobody can do the best work alone. IF we aim to be collaborative and we can harness a power much more impactful than the singular hero.
When getting your collaborative team together, don't forget to focus on these 4 key dimensions of collaboration.
1. Context- Do you have a real reason to collaborate and come together as a team?
2. Environment- Does your environment support a collaborative team?
3. Developmental- Does your collaborative team need time to develop trust and understanding before moving ahead?
4. Leadership- Do your collaborative parties have exceptional leadership to hold the new higher level collaborative together?
If we can attend to these dimensions, we become likely to succeed and be the best Wingman to our teammates.
One aspect I do love in this clip is that Val Kilmer (Iceman) and Tom Cruise (Maverick) exchange words about being each other's wingman. As we go through our day, our week, our next collaborative project, ask yourself "Who is My Wingman?" or even better "Whose Wingman am I"? How do you support those around you and make sure they are being successful?
The only true heros in Leadership are not the Mega Leader.. they are the Wingmen.
